Bristol Channel Arrival
Following the successful day cruise to
Kingswear, described by Ashley Gill in Spring's Southern
Sailings, Waverley had an even more successful evening cruise
from the Devon port. 323 joined the ship locally, while a further
296 took advantage of the steam train connection from Paignton.
After a night alongside Waverley set out for the Bristol Channel.
She had a passage to Avonmouth at just over Half Ahead described
as excellent and magnificent - flat calm all the way!
The first schools' cruise planned for Thursday
21 May was cancelled owing to measles among the intending
passengers but the evening charter went ahead. The following
day's schools' cruise and evening charter went ahead, though.
Saturday 23 May was Clevedon Pier Re-opening
Day and the ship was chartered by the Pier Trust for a series of
four short cruises during the day. All attracted over 500
passengers. Sunday 24 May saw good numbers again and on Bank
Holiday Monday over 350 went down Channel to Ilfracombe.
Unfortunately swell at Lynmouth prevented the landing by launch.
Over 100 took advantage of the coastal cruise eastward towards
Porlock Bay.
